What is the Difference Between a Powertrain Warranty and a Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty?

One aspect of purchasing a new or certified used vehicle is a warranty. You usually have several options available, but two of the most comprehensive is the powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranties. Having a good working knowledge of each will free you up to focus more attention on the vehicle.

A powertrain warranty usually covers the parts that work internally to move your vehicle. These oiled parts include the drivetrain, transmission, and engine, to name a few. There are parts that are deemed normal wear, such as the battery and clutch, which are not included.

When you are considering a bumper-to-bumper warranty, bear in mind that it is typically available for a shorter time period than the powertrain. That said, it is much more inclusive. The bumper-to-bumper includes those items that are part of the powertrain plus many additional parts. The electrical system and suspension are examples.
